about up for anything you are. Long walks, playing with other dogs and people, car rides and of course napping. With his bouncy 70 pound puppy walk and joyful expressions you can't help but smile when you look at him. Maverick has great house manners for such a young guy. He greets all people with a big happy attitude and does great with the other dogs at the dog park and at doggie daycare. Maverick is living with cats and is interested in them but not in an aggressive way. He would love to run and play with them, so depending on the cat, he could be a little too much. Small dogs, not fond of larger playful dogs may not appreciate Maverick as much as he would like them to. Maverick is still learning his basic training commands. His new family will need to be committed to continuing obedience and leash training to ensure that his grows into the amazing boy we know he is. Maverick is a big, energetic puppy, and on walks he wants to pull to inspect what he catches a scent of. He is responsive to positive, rewards based training, which makes him a very rewarding boy to work with! Maverick is house trained and enjoys spending time in his crate. He will sleep in his crate all night without fuss and when you have to be out during the day, this is where he feels most comfortable. The most important thing Maverick needs is a committed, active family. A family that understands the time and effort that goes in to a young and energetic dog. Just because Maverick is an adorable boy doesn't mean that your love for him will replace the work you need to put into him. At only 9 months old, he's got a LOT of life to live. He needs a strong, grounded, and experienced owner to get him started on the right paw! If you think you've got what it takes, and can ride out the required commitment to training and leadership, let's chat. Maverick is currently in London, Ontario. For an approved applicant transportation can be provided within Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
