    Breed: English Foxhound
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Foxhound (short coat). Twix was adopted from a NC shelter which should have been the happy ending; however, his new owner got a job in another state and didn't take Twix with him. Four days later, Twix was found wandering, very thin and obviously had not been cared for. Those hard days are over for Twix. He is such a sweet boy with a great disposition. Twix is about 5 yrs old and about 40 lbs. He gets along with everyone and will make someone a fantastic companion. Will you give him his storybook ending? **BECAUSE OF OUR REQUIREMENT FOR A HOME VISIT, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO ADOPT TO HOMES IN THE NORTHERN VA / MARYLAND / DC METRO AREA** We have adoption events EVERY SATURDAY from 12-3 p.m. Please note that not all dogs can attend every event, so if you are interested in meeting a particular dog, please complete a no-obligation application on our website at http://www.muttloverescue.org/application.html OR write to adopt@muttloverescue.org. Breed: English Foxhound

Posted Breed: Foxhound (short coat). Jerry is a handsome lemon hound who found his way into a rural shelter in NC. Jerry is a calm, reserved Southern gentleman with good manners, a sweet disposition and a love for the outdoors (especially if it involves a porch to relax on). Past the crazy puppy stage, he will make a great companion for someone who enjoys slow walks where they can take in all the sights and scents of the neighborhood (especially the scents!). A home with a calm canine companion would be great but he could also be a single dog as long as his family can spend time with him. Jerry is a real gem and would fit into most any family.
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Foxhound. Female, ~6 years, 45 lbs Approximate Age: ~6 years Approximate Weight/Size: 45 lbs I am an UNDERDOG because.... I am a hound mix! Hound breeds are very prominent in the rural south and usually the first to be euthanized at the shelter due to the overpopulation of this breed. Location Saved From: Mercer County, WV Needs a Foster in the D.C. area until a forever home is found?: No - currently with a foster! Jessie is a total love bug, repaying belly rubs and neck scratches with gentle nuzzling, shy hound kisses, and long soulful looks into her people's eyes. Jessie has become super playful with other dogs and with people. She bounces with excitement at mealtime, playtime, and whenever she sees a canine or human friend. Jessie came to us so fearful that she cowered in her crate, but has shone with just a little TLC. While Jessie remains shy around new people and easily spooked by loud noises, she is becoming more confident every day. Jessie is rapidly learning her house manners and has shown no destructive or counter-surfing tendencies. Jessie is undergoing heartworm treatment (which is covered by Rural Dog Rescue -- we can answer any questions you have about it before proceeding), so she will be getting lots of practice walking on leash and is becoming more confident walking with a person she trusts. She is housebroken but of course will need consistent reinforcement while she learns the rules in her new home. Jessie has completed heart worm treatment but had a life-threatening reaction to the medication, so it is essential that she be on preventative without interruption for the rest of her life since she would not be a candidate for repeating the treatment. Jessie has demonstrated a low prey drive for a hound and prefers inside life to chasing squirrels outside, so she may be a good choice for an apartment dweller. If you are looking for a gentle, slightly goofy soul who wants nothing more than to be with you, Jessie might be just the hound gal for you. Adopt me: http://bit.ly/adoptrdr This dog is heartworm positive. Heartworm Disease is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It is treatable, not contagious to humans and cannot be transmitted from dog to dog. Heartworm is easily prevented by giving the dog a preventive medication once a month, but unfortunately in the rural areas where most of our dogs are rescued from, prevention of diseases is not a high priority. Heartworms slowly grow in the dog’s heart and arteries over months and years of infection. The good news is that hundreds of previously heartworm positive dogs have gone on to lead normal, healthy lives post-treatment. RDR will arrange the treatment of the heartworm and coordinate all expenses. The treatment we use is recommended by the AVMA and requires a series of 3 shots over a 2 month period with very limited activity for the dog. It is the responsibility of the adopter to drive and pick-up the dog to and from Howl to the Chief for the 2 visits (one is overnight). Please bear this in mind when you apply to adopt this dog. The following are the phases of treatment. Our dogs are usually in phase one or two. More information will provided upon request. Phase 1: Oral Medication First, the dog will undergo 30 days of antibiotic treatment, which is an oral medication called doxycycline. During this time, the dog’s exercise is not severely restricted but it is advised to avoid strenuous activity with your dog so as not to strain the heart. Sometimes the dogs are started on the antibiotic treatment while in a foster home. Phase 2: Injections (Series of three) The second phase of treatment entails a series of three shots to be administered by a veterinarian. The first shot is administered upon completion of the oral medication and then the second and third are administered 30 days later on back-to-back days. The dog will also be prescribed pain medication after the shots are administered. Mission Statement: Forever true to “The Underdog”, Rural Dog Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in shelters who are often overlooked for adoption or rescue. We save the dogs who are at most risk of being euthanized: the hounds, the black dogs, the seniors, the sick and the broken. We make a commitment to reserve a minimum of 50% of the dogs we save to The Underdog. Root For The Underdog! Rural Dog Rescue's home base is in Washington, DC. We adopt to the Washington, DC metropolitan area to include Maryland and Northern Virginia. We support several high kill shelters that euthanize in 72 hours and whose kill rate is 70% or higher in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina. Rural Dog Rescue also helps dogs in need in Washington, DC and Maryland. We are 100% volunteer and foster based and no salaries are paid. 100% of your donation and adoption fee goes to helping the dogs and cats of Rural Dog Rescue. Although we try to be as accurate as possible, Rural Dog Rescue cannot guarantee the breed or full-grown adult size of any of the dogs or puppies in its care. Because many of these dogs were found as strays or are the result of irresponsible, unplanned breeding, we do not know the dog's exact background and can only list breed and size by our best educated guess. If exact breed and size are important to you, please consider adopting a dog from a specific breed rescue - We want our dogs to be adopted by people who will love and care for them forever for who they are - no matter what breed and size they turn out to be! All dogs go to their new homes spayed or neutered, up to date on all shots, wormed (although a 2nd worming may be required), started on heart worm and flea and tick preventative and sometimes microchipped. Adoption Application: http://bit.ly/adoptrdr Foster Application: http://bit.ly/rdrfosterapp Adoption Process: In order to adopt, we require an adoption application. After you submit an application, if you pass the screening, we will contact you to schedule a phone interview. We will call your references, including your veterinarian and landlord (when appropriate). We will also conduct a home visit. After these steps are complete, you will be approved to adopt a dog. Please note this process takes 1-2 weeks so applications submitted when you are ready to bring a dog home within that time frame. You can meet our adoptable dogs at events, however, we cannot guarantee that dogs at events do not have pre-approved applicants meeting them there as well, so the application is the best way to start the process. Posted Breed: Foxhound (short coat). Gemma was one of seven hounds dropped off at the shelter when the owner became ill and could no longer care for them. Unfortunately, it seems that they weren't really cared for before being dropped off as they were all covered with fleas and very thin. Gemma started out being afraid of her own shadow but she has come completely out of her shell and greets people and dogs as if they are her long lost friends. She is still scared of loud and/or unexpected noises but is getting better.
