nd chance at life. She comes to Paws from our sister rescue in TN, Robyns Nest. Mama was found in rural Tennessee in a rain culvert the morning after a big rain storm with her puppy in tow. A good samaritan attempted to search for their family, but unfortunately no one claimed them. Mama has the sweetest disposition. We don't know what her past is, but we know she holds no ill will towards anyone. She enjoys playing with other dogs and is good with kids. Update: This past summer, Mama was romping with her canine friends in the yard and was injured. She was immediately brought to the emergency vet where it was discovered that she had a spinal injury that would require surgery. Supports of Robyn's Nest and PAWS New England rallied behind Mama, and raised the funds required to get her the surgery she desperately needed. The surgery was completed without any complications and she moved to a foster home for recovery. Mama underwent intense physical therapy and laser therapy so that she could regain function of her hind legs and walk. Volunteers droves hours each day just so she could attend. Many months after surgery and therapy, Mama has made an incredible recovery!! She does have a limp that makes her walk like a drunken lady. But we think that just makes her more adorable! Besides this, she has no other medical issues related to the injury. She is restricted from playing, and will be for the rest of her life, due to fear of re-injury. But that doesn't bother Mama. She is happy being a lazy love bug. It is believed that with continued physical therapy, Mama's limp would decrease and her walking would improve. Mama would love to go to a home where she could continue her therapy, but anywhere with a warm bed for snuggling sounds just fine to Mama. After all she has been through, she deserves a loving family to call her own. Mama charms everyone she meets instantly with her incredible personality. Some wonderful family is going to be lucky to call her theirs!! We do not have a brick and mortar building to house the dogs we rescue. We have found that dogs in foster homes are much more adoptable because they have been observed in a home setting. Dogs listed with Paws New England typically reside in various locations throughout the south (primarily Tennessee, Texas, and Arkansas) and New England (not necessarily in the state of Rhode Island). You will be notified by the adoption coordinator of the location of the dog you are interested in so you have the ability to decide whether to pursue adoption or not. Dogs transported to New England are done so at a fee of $150.00 paid directly to the transporting company by Paws New England; no additional transport costs are responsibility of adopter. This fee is included in the adoption donation. Adoption donations cover pre-adoption vet costs (including vaccinations, spay/neuter when age appropriate, and heartworm testing/treatment when necessary), a microchip, and transportation to New England if necessary. Donations for our young, healthy puppies and dogs support their fellow canines of advanced age or suffering from injuries and abuse whose donations are reduced but whose veterinary costs are typically much higher. We appreciate your understanding that your dog will help others in need. All known information about the animal is listed above. We do our best to give accurate information, but most of our dogs are rescues and do not come with a known history. Paws New England abides by the dog importation regulations set forth in the states of MA, CT, NH and RI.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
