ad her, she has definitely come out of her shell more and more. She can be very playful and loves attention in the form of head scratches and belly rubs! She also loves to go on walks and spend time outside. If you’re looking for a cuddly, mellow dog inside your home but also a dog who could be a daily exercise partner Lila is your girl! She is extremely smart. She picks up on things and her training very quickly. We are working on several things such as tools to help her when she is feeling stressed, basic obedience, leash training. Lila can a little be stubborn sometimes (she talks back in the form of whining and sometimes growling if you are asking her to do something she doesn’t really want to do). She will need owners who will ensure to enforce boundaries and follow through with demands and expectations. Lila does need owners who can understand her body language as she does have anxiety BUT she shows us very clear signs she is uncomfortable when she is feeling stressed. She often moves to her kennel or to her “place” in the house when she is feeling this way. Most often this is due to high energy in the home (loud voices, noises, etc). She would do best in a family without young children. A family with older children who can respect her and give her space when she is feeling overwhelmed and who are more calm may be ok. Lila struggles with meeting new people when they come into the home. She has done fine with females, but is fearful of men. Her forever family will need to take introductions slowly as she does warm up to guests with some time. She also does not get along with large dogs, but has gotten along with small dogs and currently gets along with our small family dog. Finally, her forever family will need to understand that Lila has her limits. Her anxiety can make her fearful of new or stressful situations (the vet, taking her to stores. Etc) She will not be a dog who will be able to just jump into new things without any issues. We have taken many things slowly with her and she has done SO wonderfully. Overall, Lila is a wonderful, sweet, calm, and quiet girl. We have really loved having her in our home as she is a really great dog. While she does come with some needs, she really just needs a family who has experience and who is willing to take it slow and work with her on her needs and she would truly THRIVE! **Lila is an amazing dog and has been through a lot in her short life, so we want to make sure her next adopter will thoroughly understand all her needs and follow our requests to ensure she is successful in life. We will be requiring all of these: -No kids under 13 in the home -Proper dog introductions with our trainer (no large dogs) -Foster-to-Adopt with us for 6 weeks. -Continuous training after adoption. We will pay for training with Lila for the 6 week Foster-to-Adopt

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
