French Bulldog Dogs For Adoption in Santa Cruz, CA, USA

Dog Breed: French Bulldog (medium coat). Meet Oly, the six year old French Bulldog! With a silly crooked smile and snorty sounding breathing – Oly has a bit of charm that will likely steal a

person’s heart. He came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after his previous guardian moved and was unable to find pet friendly housing. He has a history of living with three other small breed dogs and, with management and a slow intro, coexists. He gets overwhelmed with big play sessions as well as large breed dogs. He also has experience living with a 10 year old child and did well. When left alone, Oly catches up on his beauty rest. Oly briefly met a cat and was curious but the feline was scared so the meet ‘n greet was cut short. A home with a dog-savvy cat may be a fit paired with a slow, thoughtful introduction. Oly does have a tendency to want to be where the people are and is eager to dash past doors to get to them. Adopters should be mindful of this in their set up of the new home to prevent him door dashing out of the house. Having a baby gate or x-pen by the front door will provide an environmental management to keep Oly safe. Additionally, simply making sure Oly is secured by a leash before any doors open is recommended. Typical to the French Bulldog breed – Oly will need an adopter who can commit to the likelihood of above average medical care in the day to day. French Bulldogs are prone to skin and ear infections, breathing conditions due to their conformation (amplified by stresses), as well as being prone to back problems. Oly is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
