A mongrel, mixed-breed dog

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

The Black and Tan Coonhound may require extra care for his constant shedding, but he more than makes up for this by being a great family pet. He loves the people who care for him, but is sufficiently suspicious of strangers. He's well-behaved indoors.

Boxador

Though the breed was intended to be a 50/50 mix, many of the Boxador are bred over many generations and may not always be 50% and 50%. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. The Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dogs and has flourished since before 400 BC. China is the earliest known source for Pugs, where they were pets of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. The Pug is a family favorite. Full of confidence and always eager to please, this dog makes a great playmate for children and a loyal addition to the family.

Puggle

Puggles are a mix between a Beagle and a Pug. They can have the temperament of either breed, but should make good pets.

Frenchie Pug

The Frenchie Pug is a mix between the French Bulldog and the Pug. These dogs adapt well to most families and living situations. Some do better in homes with older children.

The Siberian Husky is very similar in looks to the Alaskan Malamute, yet somewhat smaller in build and not quite as bold. Still, he needs a strong-willed owner who will stay in control. This dog loves to roam and explore, so he needs a nice big yard.

The Boxer is surprisingly good with children. This breed has a playful nature, yet is patient and intelligent. With early training, a Boxer can provide a strong and watchful companion to all family members.

The Pomeranian is a very inquisitive dog. He's intelligent and trains well. Moreover, he's quite wary of strangers, so may serve as a great ' though tiny ' watch dog.

The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.

Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is intelligent and very loyal to his owner. He's a working dog, though, so he does best when his owner gives him a job to do ' such as herding livestock.
